Hearing God’s Voice: Encountering God Beyond the Words

Hearing God’s Voice: Encountering God Beyond the Words

Introduction

Welcome to Life As God Intended. Have you ever wondered what it truly means to hear God’s voice? Many assume it’s limited to reading the Bible, but hearing God goes beyond words on a page. It’s about knowing His heart and connecting with the Living Word—Jesus Christ. Let’s explore how God speaks to us personally, calling us into a relationship that transforms our lives.

Scripture and Hearing God’s Voice

Romans 10:17 declares, “Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” This doesn’t merely refer to Scripture but points us to the Living Word, Jesus Christ. Jesus said in John 5:39-40, “Search the Scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.”

The Bible is essential, but it’s not the endpoint. It’s a means to lead us into the presence of Christ Himself. Many struggle to discern God’s voice amidst the noise of the world, relying solely on intellect or emotion. Yet, true hearing begins in our spirit, where we are united with Christ. As Jesus affirmed, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me” (John 10:27).

Understanding our identity in Christ is vital. Our body connects us to the world, our soul houses thoughts and emotions, but our spirit is where we connect with God. When we rely on our thoughts or feelings to hear God, we risk listening to ourselves rather than Him. Instead, we must tune our spirits to His voice.

Hearing God in Stillness

Elijah’s story in 1 Kings 19 offers a powerful illustration. After witnessing God’s dramatic power on Mount Carmel, Elijah fled in fear, overwhelmed by external threats and inner turmoil. But God wasn’t in the wind, earthquake, or fire—He was in the “still, small voice” (1 Kings 19:12).

This teaches us that God often speaks in quietness, inviting us to move beyond external displays and distractions to hear Him in the stillness of our hearts. Like Elijah, we need to silence the noise around us and within us to encounter God’s presence.

Psalm 46:10 calls us to “Be still, and know that I am God.” In stillness, His voice becomes clear, guiding us into the life He intends.

Living in the Presence of Christ

Hearing God’s voice is not a one-time event but a daily reality rooted in relationship. All of Scripture points to Jesus Christ, the Living Word. He declares, “I am the Alpha and the Omega” (Revelation 22:13), emphasizing that our focus must remain on Him.

When we approach Scripture, we rely on the Holy Spirit to reveal God’s heart. As Paul wrote, “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God” (Romans 8:16). This spiritual connection allows us to discern His voice and respond in faith. Jesus described this relationship, saying, “My sheep hear my voice…and they follow me” (John 10:27).

To practice God’s presence, we must live with an awareness of Christ’s indwelling. “Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you?” (2 Corinthians 13:5). His presence defines us as His people and empowers us to live according to His purpose. Quieting our hearts and embracing His presence allows us to experience His voice with clarity and peace.

Conclusion

Hearing God’s voice goes beyond mere words or dramatic displays. It’s about encountering the Living Christ, who speaks to us personally and relationally. By quieting our hearts, focusing on our spiritual union with Him, and practicing His presence daily, we open ourselves to His life-giving voice.
